Jehovah's Witnesses and others: How was doctrinal unity achieved among the apostles & first century Christians?

Actually there were sects, such as the Gnostics. This is why some of Paul's letters sound very harsh, because he was trying to prevent the Churches from abandoning the doctrine that he and the other apostles had already established. John also warned against these false teachers in his letters.
